House Tour-Shauna & Stephen

Name: Shauna & Stephen
Location: Philadelphia (north east)
Square Footage: 2,700 (how lucky are we)
Years Lived in: 3
Rent or own: rent
Describe your style: always changing! most of our furniture is from thrift stores, so we have to think of ways to reinvent it. we get into some pretty big diy projects, including teaching ourselves how to reupholster a couch.

What's your favorite free/found item?
our globe collection! a gift from shauna's dad, who rescued them from an old school.

What's your favorite purchased item?
since we have such high ceilings and metal beams, we wanted to do something that we couldn't do anywhere else... the result was a porch swing from home depot.

What has been your biggest obstacle in decorating/design?
we rent, and are lucky that our landlords will let us do pretty much anything we want... but we have to remember that projects we do can be an investment that we won't get back.

Is your design style organic or planned?
a little bit of both. we usually start with a plan, but happy accidents are our favorite thing! we never resist changing our minds mid way through a project.

What is your favorite spot in the house?
we love that our place is one big room... and we are so lucky to get a ton of natural light with 10' tall windows. it's hard to find a spot that we don't LOVE.

How has your style changed in the past 5 years?
it's always changing... but always has a mix of old and new items.

What is your favorite resource or store?
thrift store + ikea.

What is your biggest decorating/design pet peeve?
the "wagon circle", where people place their living room furniture against the walls and don't activate the center space.

What has been your favorite design trend?
right now, we are obsessed with the zakka movement in japan and are working to incorporate more natural materials in our place like wood, wicker, gingham and natural fabrics.

What is the biggest influence on your design/decorating style?
collaborating with each other. we rarely have the same opinion or same idea... so we really have to negotiate. it keep us from being predictable.

What in your home dictates how you design/decorate?
there isn't one thing... but our vintage items are what we always start with.
What is the simplest thing you have done that has made the biggest impact?
painting! it's not an exciting answer, but the truth. nothing says change like a fresh gallon of paint and a roller.
