We've all heard the phrase "Living beyond your means", most of us do it but what about living beyond your space?
I think everyone does it. I watch House Hunters on HGTV and 9 times out of 10 the homeowners will say they are looking for new digs because they've run out of room.
I think it's why the suburbs are now plagued with McMansions, people have forgotten to live with less. I know I'm certainly guilty of it.
As long as I can remember I've been hoarding furniture and objects for "my next place". When I was a thirteen I had a sofa and tables ready to go for my very first apartment, I do it now...when I see a lamp or a chair that catches my eye the first though is "I can use it in my next place".
Right now in my closet are 4 lamps, FOUR, that are waiting to be used in the next place. This weekend I'm going to pick up a gorgeous Mid-Century chair that I have no room for (after some late night thinking I decided against the chair).
I think if my husband wasn't around things would be a lot worse, not Collyer brothers level but definitely Monica's secret closet level.
It's why I've started doing the 5 Things, it helps keep me under control and slowly learn that I don't need an object as much as I think I do.
Do they have meetings for this?

I have similar problems. I live in an impossibly tiny rental house (which, luckily, has a basement where I can store all the things that will be "used regularly" whenever we move out. I really like living in a small place but sometimes I feel like it's busting at the seems. I like the idea of 5 things... maybe not every week, but at least monthly.
ReplyDeleteMy husband & I live with parents as we are trying to save for our first home. Living in one bedroom is very difficult. I have had to box up all my things & put them in a hot shed. Meanwhile, I work around furniture & bedroom linen & accessories all day & can't buy any.
ReplyDeleteGreat post.. and good idea (the 5 things)! I have a friend who won't buy anything new without getting of something else first. "Stuff" has a way of piling up before you even realize it!
