So the post today is a different one and I love it, a reader needs help and has asked me and you for any advice or opinions on her current situation.
Ananda lives in a 2,220 sq ft home with a family of five. She'd like input on color and arrangement. She's bravely letting the internet in and opening up to our thoughts.

So here we go:

The Family Room
"We spent most of the time in this room and we access the sliding glass door. As you can see, the bright red wall is the focal point in this room...I need help with deciding on a sliding glass door treatment if any and art ideas for the walls. I also feel like the room is a little cold and need some warming up. All of the rooms are pretty much like this... needing finishing touches" -Ananda

Formal Living Room Window
"I am trying to have a modern approach to my Indian inspired room. I am trying to mesh traditional with modern for a unique twist. The furniture again is orange, never realized I brought the same colors as my Master Bathroom." -Ananda

Dining Room Window.
"The walls are a red/orange color. The paint is really neat, there is sand in it so it has specks of different colors as you get closer to it. It feels pretty cool when you run your hands over the walls and feel the texture.I am definitely going to need your help with arranging items.. if take a closer look at my shelves throughout the pictures, items are placed haphazardly." -Ananda

Master Bathroom Window
"Colors in this Room are Beige with Bright Orange Glass Tile Accents. I brought in dark furniture to contrast against the neutral colors." -Ananda

So here are my thoughts:

The Family Room:
I personally hate vertical blinds, so I would tear those down and put up panel curtains which are easy to move since you use the doors they will still let a lot of light in but provide privacy. Another option is regular curtains, you can use thick in the winter and to block the light for movie nights and thin in the summer so it doesn't become a cave.

I would also consider painting the rest of the room. From the picture I can see you have a brown rug and dark woods with a light couch. I would consider either painting the remaining walls Chocolate brown and going with all white accents like frames and vases etc.

Formal Living Room Window:

It's interesting that you didn't realize you pulled the same color from your bathroom, most people do this without thinking. It just means you like the color.

Again I'd pull those blinds down and depending how bold you are paint those walls an deep, intense teal or slate blue and go with brown or yellow drapes OR go with the yellow that's in those accent pillows and try teal or gray drapes.
I'm not sure if that's a door behind there or a window but you should layer any drapes you put there. Try dark bamboo blinds with the drapes.
The great thing about using India as an inspiration is there is so much to draw from, so many great fabrics and intense colors you can use as art.

Dining Room Window:

I think you know what I'm going to say about those blinds so I won't bother. I'm so glad you painted all the walls that color! It's in the color family as your Formal Living room and your Bathroom, did you realize that?
I would put a nice clean roman blind on that window, maybe white or paper. I'd put those sticks on top of the console table if they fit, you want to bring some height into the room. Maybe a lamp on the console too?
I love the Loop Candelabras I own a set myself but since your pendant is horizontal I'd mimic that and go horizontal with the centerpiece. I love these, these and these.

Master Bathroom Window:
I LOVE the tile work here, love it! I would paint the walls the color of the lightest orange, remove the cabinet so you can see the rest of that tile on the bathtub and if you still need the storage put up some dark brown shelves (I would use these brackets with them).

I would use white candles, towels and accents since you went with dark woods and a white roman blind. Maybe a shot of green bamboo on the tub ledge or counter as well.

Anyone else care to offer their thoughts?

I love reader questions! It would be great to make this a regular feature, feel free to submit any queations you have.

  1. I totally agree about the blinds. I think getting those down in the rooms will change each one dramatically.
Good advice and I want to see after pics.
