Sometimes the flea market here in Alameda is only good for the kettle corn (believe me it's worth getting up for) and sometimes the flea market yields many treasures.
Foolishly I thought that since the Bay Bridge was closed this weekend there wouldn't be a lot of people at the flea market and we could go a little later than we usually do...wrong!
Man it was packed, never again will I wait until 9am, it's worth getting up at 6:30 am on a Sunday to beat the crowds.
I picked up a couple little treasures before stumbling on the big one...
It's a no name, so don't get too excited but it's gorgeous! I love this shade of aqua and it spins!
How much was it you ask?
$20! Unreal! I don't think Ikea even has a chair that cheap. I might replace the base, I do like that it spins but it's a little low and toes are bound to get stubbed on it. I might wait until we move and then see where it ends up and it's functionality.
Does anyone know where I can buy MCM chair bases? I'd love to see a wooden dowel base on it.

Love it! Congrats on the score :)
ReplyDeleteshop ebay for a dowel base. i was looking recently and saw them there.
ReplyDeletevery nice color, love the chair!
Yep, type "eames base" in Ebay and shop to your heart's content. The challenge will be making the base work for the chair, however. You may need to epoxy some shock mounts to the underside of your chair, so then you'd be looking at a bit of an expense between the mounts and the base.
ReplyDeleteSurprisingly ebay has been very little help, and so expensive!
ReplyDeleteI don't want a real Eames base, a knock off will be fine.
Ana, those are prices for knockoffs. Most of those bases aren't the real thing. Modernica's knockoff dowel base (which I'm sure is very nice, but is still a knockoff) is $195, so Ebay's $79 version, assuming it holds together OK, looks fairly attractive in price. That's the downside to a chair like this... the modifications you want to do are pricy, unless you are patient and lucky enough to stumble upon a good deal with lots of looking, and there is the fact that getting a Herman Miller or HM knockoff base to work on a non-HM shell may be harder than you think. $80 for a base, plus $30 or so shock mounts, plus the tools and work to mount the shock mounts.... I would cimb your Craigslist, hit antique stores and swap meets, and just see if you find a good deal.
ReplyDeleteGood to know! Thanks so much for that info.
ReplyDeletethose chairs are fabulous! I love that color, too! I was just on a search for chairs to go with our tulip table, and found some on CL but they will be a project, as well...
