Happy Friday
I feel a bit like the dog in the photo right now. My favorite magazine is going away and I'm confused.
I was with Domino from the beginning, my subscription is good until 2011...now what? Will they just fill it with Lucky or some other Conde Nast publication?
Boo
All I have left is Real Simple and Living etc.
Sure blogs are great but there's just something to sitting down and leafing through your favorite magazine, blogs just don't equal the feeling.
What will you fill the void with?
Enjoy your weekend.

Let there be light!
On the coattails of yesterday's post, what started me thinking about space and lack thereof was this lamp I found on craigslist:
It's so 60's and perfect. I have to learn to not look for lighting for a house I don't own yet.
So I will share with you some finds that hopefully someone out there can use and love and keep me away from!
Orange Mid-Century Pendant ($29.95)

Living beyond your space.
We've all heard the phrase "Living beyond your means", most of us do it but what about living beyond your space?
I think everyone does it. I watch House Hunters on HGTV and 9 times out of 10 the homeowners will say they are looking for new digs because they've run out of room.
I think it's why the suburbs are now plagued with McMansions, people have forgotten to live with less. I know I'm certainly guilty of it.
As long as I can remember I've been hoarding furniture and objects for "my next place". When I was a thirteen I had a sofa and tables ready to go for my very first apartment, I do it now...when I see a lamp or a chair that catches my eye the first though is "I can use it in my next place".
Right now in my closet are 4 lamps, FOUR, that are waiting to be used in the next place. This weekend I'm going to pick up a gorgeous Mid-Century chair that I have no room for (after some late night thinking I decided against the chair).
I think if my husband wasn't around things would be a lot worse, not Collyer brothers level but definitely Monica's secret closet level.
It's why I've started doing the 5 Things, it helps keep me under control and slowly learn that I don't need an object as much as I think I do.
Do they have meetings for this?

House Tour-Johnny and Jenni
Name: Johnny and Jenni Simmons
Location: Houston, TX
Square Footage: 2,580
Years Lived in: 1 1/2 years
Rent or own: Own
Describe your style: eclectic minimalism
What's your favorite free/found item?
Jenni: An antique hymnal rack I found, and a Moroccan wire tea light holder from my Mom.
Johnny: The Chinese armoire that I repainted black, and a wooden pulpit in our entryway - two more gifts from my Mother-in-law.
What's your favorite purchased item?
Jenni: The pendant lamp in the dining room and my white desk chair, both from West Elm.
Johnny: I like that pendant lamp, too, and our platform bed from West Elm.
What has been your biggest obstacle in decorating/design?
Jenni: I'm recovering from a few health issues, so I don't always have the energy to decorate. However, it has made me thankful for the simple beauty and natural light in our home, and I've realized that decorating slowly is a very creative endeavor.
Johnny: Finding the time in between teaching drum lessons, practicing, and gigs (and all the yard work!).
Is your design style organic or planned?
Jenni: Organic - I like to wait and see which object belongs in an empty space.
Johnny: I agree.
What is your favorite spot in the house?
Jenni: Living room and my upstairs writing room.
Johnny: Living room and my garage drum studio.
How has your style changed in the past 5 years?
Jenni: We've become more intentional; everything we bring into our home tells a certain story and reflects who we are.
Johnny: Now that we're homeowners, we decorate with more permanence since we're here to stay.
What is your favorite resource or store?
Jenni: Thrift stores, Etsy, artwork by family and friends, and West Elm.
Johnny: IKEA and West Elm.
What is your biggest decorating/design pet peeve?
Jenni: As much as I like a modern, minimalist aesthetic, I don't like rooms with only straight lines. A home needs to be comfortable and inviting.
Johnny: Yes, I don't like rooms to be so clean and arranged that they don't look lived in.
What has been your favorite design trend?
Jenni: I'm not hip to all the design trends, but I think the more vintage and handmade items in your home, the better.
Johnny: I don't follow trends enough to know.
What is the biggest influence on your design/decorating style?
Jenni: The flickr photostreams of "little birds " and "nicole | habit of being " among many others - I think flickr is better than any design magazine.
Johnny: Jenni.
What in your home dictates how you design/decorate?
Jenni: Our comfort and our guests, keeping breakables away from the two cats (Harley and Milo), and finding space for more bookshelves.
Johnny: Space and functionality.
What is the simplest thing you have done that has made the biggest impact?
Jenni: Paint colors. When we first moved in, the walls sported the most hideous wallpaper. We selected soothing shades of brown, taupe, blues, and greens, and even left the upstairs walls unpainted for now.
Johnny: Replacing the downstairs carpet with bamboo flooring - it changed the whole feel of the house.

easy come, easy go
This one hurts a little...
I've decided to sell my Gocco machine.
I've used it so little since I got it, and with my job and my Lolabags. shop I can't get enough use out of it to justify the purchase.
By selling it I can concentrate more on Lolabags. and put the money towards something we really need like a new bed, rug, dressers, house etc.
So with a heavy heart I bid it farewell and with so many people wanting one I'm sure it will get much use at it's new home.
Here's the auction if you're interested.

5 Things...
I think I need to do another kitchen purge. Since I've resigned to only buying vintage kitchenware I'm finding the "new" pieces that I have aren't as attractive to me to use.

Epic House Tour
Today is pretty fitting for this. This is a six part series, you can follow this link to check out the other parts.
HOPE
Today is a good day. I'm excited to hear our new President's speech and to usher in some much needed change.
No matter how you voted, I'm sure you can enjoy making your own "HOPE" poster, which became an enduring icon in this election so much that the Smithsonian now has one in their collection.

House Tour-Constança
Name: Constança
Location: Lisboa, Portugal
Square Footage: 70 square metres
Years Lived in: One
Rent or own: Own
Describe your style: Sleek cottage (I just made that up… does it make any sense?)
What's your favorite free/found item?
The armchair in the living room. My parents bought it when they got married; it used to be a leather armchair. When my mum gave it to us we had it upholstered in this English fabric I bought in Madrid for €5 a metre!
What's your favorite purchased item?
Our IKEA four poster bed. We bought it yellow and painted it white.
What has been your biggest obstacle in decorating/design?
I wish I had more space… an extra room would be nice.
Is your design style organic or planned?
Well, it started out with a planned trip to IKEA to buy all the basics in white. After that, it has evolved organically.
What is your favorite spot in the house?
My sewing corner.
How has your style changed in the past 5 years?
My taste has changed a great deal: now it’s more monochromatic and sleek. As for my style, I can’t really tell because this is my first home!
What is your favorite resource or store?
IKEA and Belgian flea markets.
What is your biggest decorating/design pet peeve?
Just as I can’t relate to skinny models in fashion magazines, I am sick of interiors featured in the majority of interior décor magazines. I much rather look at real people’s houses on Flickr!
What has been your favorite design trend?
All-white with dashes of colour.
What is the biggest influence on your design/decorating style?
The internet: Flickr and design blogs.
What in your home dictates how you design/decorate?
The lack of space does!
What is the simplest thing you have done that has made the biggest impact?
The kitchen floor tiles: they were the cheapest tiles in the shop and they make it look like a French country kitchen.

Happy Friday!
Look at all that storage! My first concern would be dust though...but how great would it be to have a place for all your books and music and media? I think I even see some ikea drawers in there.
Have a great weekend!

Design Vices
We all have vices, but what are you Design vices? Do you collect Eames chairs? Are you into Vintage planters? Does your heart palpate for Mid-Century? Is there anything you just can't say no to?
Unfortunately I think I have too many design vices. I love more than I can afford. Especially Jonathan Adler pieces. I know they're overpriced and purely decorative but I can't help myself, the white relief pieces are so simple and beautiful and his cluster vases and the menagerie animals...oh I could go on.
So what are your vices?

Ikea Hack
I am currently in the market for a new bed. I still need a new rug but the bed is on it's last legs, quite literally.
It's an Ikea frame, they don't even make it anymore in full size. I think it was called Lillhamer, something like that. They make a similar one in a twin:
Pretty basic and it's survived awhile too, I know a lot of people knock Ikea quality but this bed is 6 or 7 years old and has survived 3 or 4 moves. All that moving and assembling, it's pretty impressive. I think if we'd stayed in once place all this time the bed would still be doing good.
As it stands right now the veneer is peeling the screws are stripped and no matter how many times we tighten it up with an Allen wrench after a few days it's squeaky again. (Please notice there are no dirty jokes here, I'm fighting it as much as I can)
A very odd thing about the bed is that it fit our old regular mattress fine but when we got the Sonno Prima from DWR the new mattress comes over the frame about an inch. I though all beds were made by the same measurements, I guess not.
Here's what the skirt looks like:
and the storage underneath with the leg lifts:
The skirt is attached with velcro, the left lift are a must for the storage and because I prefer a high bed.
Here's the Headboard:
For the headboard we bought one of those ready to hang prints in the as-is section and covered it with some fabric (also from Ikea) and attached eith several L-brackets.
The bed was $99 and with everything we did I'd say $30, Not that bad for no lost pillows and plenty of hidden storage.

House Tour-Shauna & Stephen
Name: Shauna & Stephen
Location: Philadelphia (north east)
Square Footage: 2,700 (how lucky are we)
Years Lived in: 3
Rent or own: rent
Describe your style: always changing! most of our furniture is from thrift stores, so we have to think of ways to reinvent it. we get into some pretty big diy projects, including teaching ourselves how to reupholster a couch.
our globe collection! a gift from shauna's dad, who rescued them from an old school.
What's your favorite purchased item?
since we have such high ceilings and metal beams, we wanted to do something that we couldn't do anywhere else... the result was a porch swing from home depot.
we rent, and are lucky that our landlords will let us do pretty much anything we want... but we have to remember that projects we do can be an investment that we won't get back.
Is your design style organic or planned?
a little bit of both. we usually start with a plan, but happy accidents are our favorite thing! we never resist changing our minds mid way through a project.
What is your favorite spot in the house?
we love that our place is one big room... and we are so lucky to get a ton of natural light with 10' tall windows. it's hard to find a spot that we don't LOVE.
How has your style changed in the past 5 years?
it's always changing... but always has a mix of old and new items.
What is your favorite resource or store?
thrift store + ikea.
What is your biggest decorating/design pet peeve?
the "wagon circle", where people place their living room furniture against the walls and don't activate the center space.
What has been your favorite design trend?
right now, we are obsessed with the zakka movement in japan and are working to incorporate more natural materials in our place like wood, wicker, gingham and natural fabrics.
What is the biggest influence on your design/decorating style?
collaborating with each other. we rarely have the same opinion or same idea... so we really have to negotiate. it keep us from being predictable.
What in your home dictates how you design/decorate?
there isn't one thing... but our vintage items are what we always start with.
What is the simplest thing you have done that has made the biggest impact?
painting! it's not an exciting answer, but the truth. nothing says change like a fresh gallon of paint and a roller.
