Happy Friday!
Aren't these colors amazing? To me this is so 'California' (I bet this bed lives in Utah).
Have a great weekend!

Lotta Jansdotter
I love Lotta Jansdotter, I love her books and her craft projects. I wish she'd put out a book about her home the way Amy Butler did, but for now I've got Sunset Magazine.
Sunset did a piece on Lotta's 725 square foot San Franciso apartment that she shares with her husband, check it out:

House Tour-Amanda & Matt
Name: Amanda & Matt
Location: Crossroads, Texas
Square Footage: 1,600
Years Lived in: 2.5
Rent or own: Own
Describe your style: Comfortable minimal - a mix of traditional and contemporary design with neutral colors.
What's your favorite free/found item?
We are fortunate to have quite a bit of nice free furniture passed down from family. The favorite would have to be the antique art deco bedroom set that I've had since I was a little girl that's now in the guest room.
What's your favorite purchased item?
Besides our dog - the Willard Clark print in the hallway, we bought it on our honeymoon in Santa Fe so it was our first big purchase together.
What has been your biggest obstacle in decorating/design?
My husband and I both care about design and are pretty picky - so everything is a compromise. Finding something we both like that is also in our price range can be a challenge. We don't settle and buy things we don't love, so we don't have a lot of things.
Is your design style organic or planned?
Both - we have always been anti-clutter people, so I knew our home would be simple and more modern but there was never a specific planned vision.
What is your favorite spot in the house?
The living room - it's comfortable and the our main room for spending time together.
How has your style changed in the past 5 years?
This is our first house together, so we're really finding our style for the first time. When we first moved to this house we only had a plaid couch and tiny TV stand in the living room, now we've got a whole house full of things we love that will also work in future homes.
What is your favorite resource or store?
World Market! We have more things from here than any other store, even some of the wine in the wine bar is from World Market.
What is your biggest decorating/design pet peeve?
Unplanned clutter - everything should have a place and serve a purpose.
What has been your favorite design trend?
I know everyone has one, but I still think Keep Calm and Carry On posters rock.
What is the biggest influence on your design/decorating style?
Online inspiration - I always thought we didn't have the budget have a home with style until I discovered all the great design blogs with inspiration photos online. Now I know having a home you love is about making good choices and not a price point.
What in your home dictates how you design/decorate?
The light floors really set the stage for a more modern and minimal style than we'd had in the past.
What is the simplest thing you have done that has made the biggest impact?
Adding rugs - since so many of our things are neutral adding the burgundy rug to the living room made the space more cozy and added color.

Just one more thing...
I have a few vintage pieces laying around the house, and they've become part of the 5 Things. I thought I would put them on Etsy just because they're too cute to go to the thrift store.
So here they are!
So here they are!
Happy Friday!
Check out that dark grout on those tiles, it adds a very graphic backdrop. The white is an accent color to all that red. I prefer a U-shaped kitchen, but this one isn't too shabby!

House Tour-Kay
Name: Kay de Bruin
Location: the Netherlands
Square Footage: 165 m2 (1,776 sq. ft.)
Years Lived in: 14 years
Rent or own: own
Describe your style: Mid-century modern style with a touch of country road
What's your favorite free/found item?
A very nice 19th century walnut sideboard which originally belonged to my husbands grandparents.
What's your favorite purchased item?
My favorite purchased item is also my best ever charity shop find. It's an old sewing box from the 50's. It consists of four little boxes with colorful wooden covers on a black metal stand. Very unusual.
What has been your biggest obstacle in decorating/design?
That must be our kitchen floor. In the 90's it was very trendy to use unglazed Portuguese tiles. So we put these in the kitchen but we realized that they are very unpractical because they get very easily stained and are impossible to clean. We still have to replace them but that will probably wreck the whole kitchen.
Is your design style organic or planned?
Lately we only buy seconds hand from flee markets and charity shops. Therefore our style must be organic. If we find something nice we just squeeze it in.
What is your favorite spot in the house?
The dinner table. We have a round Danish table from Fritz Hansen (designed by Piet Hein and Bruno Mathsson) with four DSW chairs designed by Charles and Ray Eames. We do everything there except watching television.
How has your style changed in the past 5 years?
Yes, very much. About four years ago we started collecting mid-century modern furniture and within a year or so we replaced all our IKEA and other modern stuff.
What is your favorite resource or store?
Church flee markets are the best. We get a lot from charity shops as well and occasionally we buy on the web (eBay, etsy and a big Dutch website).
What is your biggest decorating/design pet peeve?
Time.
What has been your favorite design trend?
The vintage revival.
What is the biggest influence on your design/decorating style?
Books, music and magazines.
What in your home dictates how you design/decorate?
Our cats. We don't buy much 'expensive' upholstered furniture anymore.
What is the simplest thing you have done that has made the biggest impact?
Lots of White paint. In the 90's we painted our walls lime green and red. After a couple of years we went back to plain white and it had a dramatic impact.

More Ikea
Since we're on the subject. I was going through the new catalog and I saw this piece of furniture for a teen's room:
It's the Eina Wardrobe ($99.99) and I think it would be perfect for a loft or a place without closets. In a loft you could take two or four, put them together and easily rig one side with fabric and create a walk in closet or you could put it up against the wall and create a fabric curtain.
New at Ikea
It's that time again! New stuff at Ikea and a new catalog.
Here's what caught my eye:
Ketty Rand Cushion ($9.99)
Smarta Serving Bowl ($8.99)
I was in there the other night with the idea that I was going to get all of the above but I walked out with some frozen meatballs and these two items:
Envis Spatula Set ($4.99)
Ikea PS Clock ($29.99)
I'm going to preempt this with the fact that I am aware I'm a dork, but I think the flat spatula will be perfect for risotto...I can't wait to try it!
They also have this great tool at the registers for $1.99, it's like a pocket knife only with allen wrenches and screwdrivers in the sizes of Ikea's hardware.
