If you follow me on Facebook and Twitter you know I've been been talking about a bookcase that I've been working on.
On our last weekend in California my husband and I found a cute little Mid-Century bookcase on the side of the road. It had seen better days it was wobbly, dirty and sad.
I popped it in my trunk knowing I would soon have a basement and this would be a perfect project to tackle in it. After I finished the matching desks for my husband and I (pictures soon I promise) and then made curtains, I moved on to the bookcase.
I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it, where I wanted it to go and what I wanted to put in it.
In our old place we had built a built in curio cabinet in the kitchen. I lined the back with some great orange and red lava lamp-y fabric and it housed my Jonathan Adler vases. I thought I had a picture of it but all I could find was this one:
You can barely see some salt and pepper shakers in there!
This is what I wanted the bookcase to hold. So the bookcase wouldn't be overcrowded I sold about 5 Adler vases that I didn't truly love (hey 5 Things!) Then my husband sanded the bookcase and I started painting.
Here it is before any work took place:
Pretty hard to love huh? It was actually dirtier in person. So after the sanding there was primer, then a few coats of the same semi-gloss white paint I used on the dresser, then I painted the interior shelves Benjamin Moore's "Burnt Caramel". The whole project cost maybe $30
All in all it took about a week and I am in LOVE with the final result. Are you ready?
I love, love, LOVE it! I'm so happy with the color and the teal and white vases just *pop* against the orange.

I love love love it too! Awesome job!
ReplyDeleteTHAT IS ADORABLE! YOU HAVE A GREAT CAMERA! THE AFTERS LOOKS LIKE APARTMENT THERAPY PICS!!!! FABULOUS JOB!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it!!! It looks so awesome. Great work.
ReplyDeleteThat IS gorgeous!! I TOO love the pot of color in that wonderful combination. What a great find and redo. Great job!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great return on your $30 investment! When you're bored and want to make random trips to Houston - I have two mid-century-esque dressers (long) that could use a re-do!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!! I love the color, it really does make the teal and white pop. Fantastic job!
ReplyDeleteThose colours sing! Bravo for you!
ReplyDeleteShut up! The orange pop is perfection. And how jealous I am of all that Adler goodness?
ReplyDeleteThis is just gorgeous! I love how all the colors pop.
ReplyDeleteThank you Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI'm really proud of myself on this one, who doesn't love a nice pop of orange?
Oh, it's breath taking! Isn't orange the best? I painted one of my walls with Behr's Caramelized Orange and placed a hallow bookcase in front of it; gave it that nice pop it was lacking.
ReplyDeleteWow, that is an amazing makeover. I love how you used the contrasting color inside.
ReplyDeleteThat looks amazing! I'm doing something similar in my daughters room right now and love that the choice of colours inside really make the whole thing pop. The orange btw looks fab-u-lous!
ReplyDeleteThis is superb! I love the idea and color.
ReplyDeleteyou're on design sponge, congratulations!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. This is amazing! I have three shelves that are in need of some color ... I may just do this exact same thing just with turquoise. LOVE IT.
ReplyDeleteC Fierce: Try Benjamin Moore's "Surf Blue" that was my second choice and it's such a brilliant shade of turquoise.
ReplyDeleteI really love how you put the items off center on the top! What an awesome look!!
ReplyDeleteFound you through design*sponge and I absolutely love this! The color combinations are great!
ReplyDeleteJust gorgeous--great job!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I've had this *same* bookshelf ever since I can remember except mine has 3 shelves. It, too, is looking a little unloved these days. This may be just the inspiration I need to update mine as well!
ReplyDeleteHow come whenever I find furniture on the side of the road, it's broken down futon chairs or cheap MDF tables? lol. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE what you did with this. Now if I can just find a similar piece for my daughter's room....
