Chair.

My chair re-upholstery job has gotten a little attention.

No, not from these guys, Apartment Therapy did a post about the chair. It's always kind of prickly when a project you've worked hard on ends up there because the comments are usually unkind. I know a few bloggers who actually dread being mentioned by AT. A lot of commenters take advantage of being an faceless opinion. They forget there are real people with real feelings who worked hard on a room/project/design. Instead of constructive criticism it just ends up being 'that's the ugliest thing I've ever seen'. Meh, That's life on internet message boards though.

 So far the chair hasn't had a lot of mud thrown it's way, people have been surprisingly kind.  My favorite comment so far is "Jesus, what an eyesore". Niiice, glad I didn't redo the chair for that guy, he's probably pretty hard to please.

Check it out here.

  1. I love this, there is a part of me that wants to be Darma (a la Darma and Greg)...this chair is like the best of both worlds! You're also making me feel boring! ;-)

    Lastly, I always feel bad for bloggers when they are featured on AT. I love to read AT but the comments are usually hard to swallow.

    Great job!

  2. That last "eyesore" comment really speaks depths about the so-called expertise of the author. Have you read their previous comments? Mostly negative and nothing to contribute. Eh.

    All that matters is that you're happy and proud of this project :)

  3. I totally know what you mean about AT. I used to write for them, and I just got so sick of the negativity. My editor reminded me that for every one negative comment, there are thousands of other people who have been inspired, but just didn't bother to click through to tell you so. I have to tell you, I saw this chair project of yours when you first posted about it and DIED I loved it so much. My brother recovered his knock-off Eames recliner this year, too. I posted it about it on AT and people went all up in arms about defiling a classic chair. I'm like, DUDE, it was a KNOCK OFF. haha

    Anyways, if misery really does love company, then maybe you want to peep all the comments his chair got at AT: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/chicago/projects/before-after-eames-recliner-replica-gets-reupholstered-139222 At least you might get a little giggle out of people's ridiculousness. ;)

  5. I am glad that your chair got on AT, it is SO striking. But yeah, they are mean in their comment section on AT. But you know you will always get love comments here! {hopefully}

  6. I'm clicking through just to tell you that chair is fabulous! It wouldn't fit in my home, but I love your ingenuity.

    There are inevitably the AT commenters waiting to pounce on your "after" and tell you to go back to "before," or if you write in to ask about how to arrange your living room with your television, they'll tell you you shouldn't own a TV to begin with. Brush your shoulders off. :)

    I'll definitely be back to visit. Great work!

  7. You guys are sweet, Thanks!

    I'm not at all bothered by any of it. I didn't do the project to please anyone but myself. The fact that it's polarizing tells me I did something good.

    Seems AT has deleted the negative comments. I'm against that. We've got free speech in this country. Love something or hate it, you've got the right to say it.

  10. I love the chair. The fabric looks like woven wall panels from Laos or something like that. Definetily inspired and happy to say so!
